Casting call for new local production at Malvern Theatres

MALVERN Theatres and The Everyman in Cheltenham are delighted to have selected the winning entry for their inaugural playwriting competition.

Actors are now invited to apply to join the cast, workshopping the play and performing in the final production, which will be staged in both Malvern and Cheltenham.

Cathie Rolinson, who now lives in Cheltenham but previously lived in Malvern, won the competition with her play, In Veritas.

Ms Rolinson said: “I’m delighted to have had my play selected. I’ve lived in both Malvern and Cheltenham, and so to write a piece with local identity at its heart was an exciting challenge.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my words come to life.”

The theatres are looking for three professional actors (two male-identifying, one female-identifying) for paid roles in the production, which explores themes of friendship, as well as truth and technology and how they intersect.

The competition, which was part of the Three Counties Talent Hub scheme, accepted submissions from any writers working in the Three Counties, and the play had to have a ‘sense of place’ within one or both of the towns where the theatres are based.

Fred Moroni, executive director at Malvern Theatres, said: “We were thrilled to receive dozens of entries for our inaugural writing competition and choosing a winner proved to be a tough task.

“We look forward to seeing this production, and hopefully many more going ahead.”

The Three Counties Talent Hub (3CTH) is an ambitious arts development programme that identifies, fosters, and gives a professional platform to creatives working in the three counties.

In time, Malvern Theatres hopes to expand 3CTH to include other elements of theatre, as well as different artistic genres such as classical music.

Paul Milton, Creative Director at Everyman, Cheltenham, said: “Bringing new voices to the stage is central to the mission of both Cheltenham and Malvern’s work, and what better way to achieve this than by working with an exciting, local playwright. I’m looking forward to directing this contemporary piece.”
