Chairman hoping to pull in the pounds for charity

THE CHAIRMAN of Malvern Hills District Council is set to plough through her own personal challenge to raise money for charity.

Coun Barbara Williams will drive a 53-year-old vintage tractor across the district on Sunday, September 13, in aid of the Midlands Air Ambulance.

The 64-year-old will travel 44 miles through Malvern Hills – setting off from Buckbury at 10.30am and finishing in Tenbury Wells about five and a half hours later – on a red 1962 Massey Ferguson 35.

She will be joined on the day by her partner Neville Jones and hopes to raise at least £3,000 for the cause. Almost £1,000 has already been donated.

Coun Williams said: “I am full of admiration for the brave paramedics and pilots of the Midlands Air Ambulance.

“I have known people who have had to call on the service in the past and seen first-hand how vital it can be.

“Every time they fly out on a mission it costs £2,500 and they have to fund the whole service through public donations alone so I just wanted to do something a bit different to raise as much money as I can to support their work.

“My partner collects vintage tractors and I thought ‘if you can’t beat them join them’ so I bought one of my own which spent its working life on a farm in Aberystwyth, has been restored and I’ll be using on the day.

“It will also give me a chance to see more of the district and I hope as many people as possible will come out and support me and donate to this very worthwhile cause.”

It is not the first time Coun Williams has put on a fund-raiser, with her previous efforts including travelling from Britain to Spain in a vintage car and trekking through China.
