A LONG-STANDING charity supporting Malvern’s elderly residents is celebrating after being awarded a considerable grant from the National Lottery Community Fund.
Community Action (Malvern and District) has earned a £10,000 grant to aid its support work of local people over the age of 60.
The charity has been supporting people for over 50 years, particularly those who are lonely, isolated and need help to go shopping or to visit a friend.
As people in Malvern’s community grow older and less mobile, the charity is learning of more and more people needing its help.
The support service will utilise the funds to offer 50 very senior citizens a fortnightly Sunday afternoon social in a warm and welcoming space, with afternoon tea and cakes.
Funds will also support bringing in guest speakers and entertainers such as specialists in health, beauty and manicure, chair yoga, arts and crafts, local history and musicians.
Organisers will provide a transport service to pick up and drop off those attending the afternoon social.
Launa Brooks, chief executive officer of the charity, said: “We found for the first time that a growing number of people, some even aged 90+, were unable to manage shopping trips or even going out for a walk.
“This group of people were becoming even more isolated and lonely without some kind of help.
“But now thanks to the Lottery grant we can offer 50 very senior citizens a fortnightly Sunday afternoon social.
“And to top it all we can now arrange at least one coach trip this summer.”
The grant is also another success story for Community Boost, a Worcestershire organisation who have helped generated over £2million in grant funding for voluntary and community organisations across the county.
The organisationa aids voluntary and community organisations in accessing funding opportunities.
