Chase School pupils immerse themselves in history of Battle of Hastings

IT WAS 1066 all over again for Year 7 students at The Chase School in Malvern this week.

Under the bright sunshine yesterday (Thursday), two lucky classes got the chance to don armour, heft their swords and shields and re-enact the most famous date in English history.

The modern-day Norman conquerors and their Anglo-Saxon rivals are students at The Chase and class teacher Miss Lynda Holloway took advantage of the fine weather to round off a hectic Spring term in a fun manner.

”It’s a great way to bring home the sheer terror of close combat,” she said.

“And it nicely wraps up all our classwork on the reasons behind the Norman Conquest, tactics and the ebb and flow of the battle.”

The students used replica plastic helmets, foam swords and shields made by the Chase’s outgoing head of history Mr Paul Berthold.

“We have an innovative approach to teaching history here, right from the start in Year 7,” he said.

“This helps explain our outstanding A-level results, where for several years now our 6th formers have gone to continue their history studies at some of the best universities, and it helps to explain why we are often considered to have some of the best History A-level results in the county.”
