Chase students to debate EU vote to live public audience

YOUNGSTERS in Malvern are to debate in public on whether or not Britain should remain in the European Union.

Sixth-form students from The Chase School’s debating team will be putting forward cases to remain and to exit the EU when the debate is held on Saturday, March 19 at Lansdowne Crescent Methodist Church starting at 7.45pm.

Chaired by Alison Webster, social responsibility advisor for the diocese of Oxford, the ‘European Union: Remain in or leave?’ debate will see Aidan Johnson and Abbey Morrison representing arguments for staying in the EU, while Joe Brady and Charlotte Anthony will give reasons for leaving.

The all-student panel will then answer questions from the audience following refreshments.

Last week the Observer reported how opinions over the upcoming EU referendum were split between West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin and Ledbury MP Bill Wiggin with them favouring on the side of remaining and leaving respectively.

Mrs Baldwin expressed her support to Prime Minister David Cameron’s wish to remain in the EU.

She said: “Our farmers and businesses get access to an enormous market and we can choose to live, work, study, travel freely and own property in the EU with the same protections as home.”

However, Mr Wiggin said he would find it hard to support a vote to remain in the EU if the UK’s authority was compromised by staying.

“Unless the other EU members significantly restore our sovereignty, I think it would be almost impossible to support a vote to remain,” he said.

Entry to the ‘European Union: Remain in or leave?’ debate is free, but it is advisable to book a place in advance by contacting www.remainorleaveeu.eventbrite.co.uk.
