Child of Courage Award winner from Malvern invited to Royal Wedding

AN INSPIRING Malvern girl who was recognised with a special award after she ticked off a ‘bucket list’ for her baby brother has been invited to the Royal Wedding.

Tilly Barker, 11, won the Child of Courage Award at the Pride of Birmingham Awards last month and will be at Windsor Castle on May 19 to watch HRH Prince Harry marry Megan Markle.

She is one of six people from the county who have been invited to the wedding for their outstanding contributions made to the community.

Mum Kelly told the Observer: “Tilly is very excited to be going – she screamed when she opened the letter.

“Her dad and I are going down with her but unfortunately she can only take one person in with her so I am going.

“It was quite a shock to be invited and was not expecting it at all.”

With help from specialist staff and volunteers at Acorns Children’s Hospice, Tilly made sure her brother Henry’s last day was filled with positive memories as she spent the final few hours with him and mum Kelly.

Henry was born with a serious genetic disorder in April 2016.

The family was referred to Acorns for the Three Counties and Tilly planned the special list.

It included having a picnic with him in the hospice gardens, a swim in the hospice hydrotherapy pool and a cuddle in a rocking chair.

Tilly still receives support from the Acorns Sibling Group, which offers support to other brothers and sisters in similar situations.
