Classical singer to hold charity concert in Malvern

A CLASSICAL singer will be hoping to hit the high notes as she hosts a concert in aid of a charity close to her heart.

Former Malvern St James Girls’ School pupil Zara Edwards is set to put on the event at Great Malvern Priory to raise funds for the Flint House Police Rehabilitation Centre at Goring-on-Thames.

The 21-year-old, who is currently studying music at Bath University, heard about the charity through her dad, John Edwards, who is a retired police officer.

It aims to provide the highest standards of individually planned, intensive, rehabilitation services for sick and injured, serving and retired officers.

“I probably wouldn’t have heard about the charity if my dad wasn’t an officer,” Zara said.

“I would say that is the sole reason behind it but I did my own research and because of my love of music, wanting to do a concert was my first thought.

“Then I thought if I do it for this charity it would be a great idea to combine the two.

“I had been thinking about doing this for nearly a year but it has just been picking a date and being able to fit it around my university studies.”

Having started singing lessons when she was just 11, Zara went on to join a church choir before gaining a music scholarship at Malvern St James.

It won’t just be Zara performing on the evening, as a piano soloist, a soprano, a tenor and the West Mercia Police band will all take to the stage.

But despite doing numerous concerts, the youngster admitted organising one was an experience she had never endured.

“I have been part of many charity concerts in and around Malvern but I have never organised one on my own,” she added.

“It has been more work than I have expected, but in a good way. I have been part of concerts from school and I have seen them being organised. I have had a lot of support and I kind of know what to do, but it is just getting it all together.”

The event takes place from 7pm on May 16. Tickets are £12 and can be bought by e-mailing [email protected] or calling 07453771953.
