Council relaunches bursary scheme for apprentices

Malvern Editorial 26th Jul, 2023   0

A POPULAR bursary scheme for apprentices in Malvern is back.

The Upskilling Bursary Scheme has been relaunched by Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) following a successful roll-out in 2022, as part of the Community Renewal Fund Project.

The scheme, which aims to encourage youngsters to take on apprenticeships and trainee programmes, is available to apprentices or trainees of any age who meet certain criteria.

The £500 bursary payment is available to applicants who live in the Malvern Hills District, earn less than £220 per week (before deductions) and are working for more than 30 hours per week.

Applicants must also be employed for at least 12 months and be completing an Ofqual or approved Apprenticeship Standard course which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

The payment will help cover the cost of travel, equipment, tools and clothing necessary to access training.

It can also be used towards the cost of travel equipment such as purchase of a bicycle or e-bike, if cycling to work.

The bursaries will be administered via Worcestershire Apprenticeships on behalf of MHDC.

Councillor Beverley Nielsen, portfolio holder for economic development and tourism at MHDC, said: “We are so pleased to bring this scheme back.

“The cost of travel or equipment can be a struggle for apprentices, which may prevent them from applying for certain jobs.

“To be able to provide help with this really can make a difference.”
