Counterfeit alcohol seized in Malvern

COUNTERFEIT vodka and whiskey where the duty had not been paid has been seized in Malvern, Hollywood, Bromsgrove, Kidderminster and Stourport.

The confiscated contraband consisted of 44 bottles of alcohol in total which came after 74 businesses across the county were visited by Worcestershire Regulatory Services.

Joint committee chairman Coun Lucy Hodgson said: “Our officers are vigilant as we keep striving to protect our public and our honest business community from illegal behaviour.

“Not only is it unfair that our legitimate businesses are undercut by those who have decided to trade illegally, but illicit alcohol potentially puts people’s health at risk and dodges taxes too.”

Senior trading standards officer Peter Holmes added the seizures ensured illegal alcohol was taken out of circulation to assist legitimate and honest traders who were squeezed by such criminal behaviour.

“A lot of this product is produced or smuggled by criminal gangs who have no consideration for the public or the economy.”

Dangers posed by counterfeit vodka include potential poisoning by uncontrolled levels of methanol, which can cause blindness when consumed.

All alcohol is subject to duty which is used to support the economy and local communities.
