Daughter saddles up to ride 500km in memory of mum

A HALLOW cyclist will be saddling up in memory of her mum to journey the 500km from London to Paris in aid of Cure Leukaemia.

Sarah Watmore, 50, is not a stranger to gruelling bike tours a in 2019, after an exhausting week-long ride from Toulouse through the Pyrenees, she stood at the top of a hill overlooking Barcelona on the final day and took a call from her Mum.

Maggie was ringing to let her daughter know that her cancer had returned. Having only recently been declared in remission, Maggie died within a fortnight, just nine months after retiring at the age of 70, and not having had a chance to fulfil any of her retirement dreams.

“Cancer affects every single one of us and it is cruel,” said Sarah.

“If my efforts can help prevent just one other person from losing a loved one to this horrible disease, then it’ll be so completely worth it.

“The full £1,500 I am working to raise will go directly to Cure Leukaemia. I am paying my own travel, accommodation, food and for the support team. And the blood, sweat and gears will definitely be all mine too!”

The charity ride leaves the Royal Observatory in Greenwich Park on June 8, arriving at the Eiffel Tower finish line in Paris on June 11.

The 175 riders taking part also includes Sarah’s partner, Paul Felton, 56 from Kidderminster, who lost his father to cancer on Paul’s 50th birthday.

As part of the fund-raising campaign, Sarah has organised a general knowledge quiz at Hallow Village Hall on January 14 from 7pm.

For teams of up to six, tickets are £6 per person and can be booked by e-mailing [email protected].

Quizzers are invited to bring their own snacks with a cheap bar available for drinks, and a raffle will also be held.

Any donations of raffle prizes would be hugely appreciated.
