A MALVERN author has spoken of his delight after his first novel attracted global interest – so much so discussions have started about turning it into a movie.
Suckley based novelist Richard Wall penned his new book ‘Fat Man Blues’ at the end of last year which is currently available to buy on Amazon.
But the novel, which celebrates blues music in years gone by, could be set for much bigger things to come with plans afoot for it to have a mainstream publishing deal.
If that is successful then it could possibly be adapted into a movie, should initial discussions come to fruition.
The book tells the story of an Englishman who goes to Mississippi – the home of Blues music – where he meets the mysterious Fat Man, who offers him the chance to go on an afterlife journey and see the real blues of the 1930s.
A big blues music fan himself, Mr Wall told the Observer the book came about following a trip to Memphis several years ago.
“It came about in 2012 when my wife treated me to a trip to Memphis and one night in a bar in Clarksdale we met this fat local guy, so to speak, and were talking about blues music but then he suddenly walked out and left us.
“We felt it was a bit strange and then my friend said the conversation would make for a great opening to a great story so I started writing it and three years later I’ve got a novel out of it.”
Talks are underway about securing a mainstream publishing deal for the book, which would mean it could be sold in book stores across the country rather than just on Amazon as is currently the case.
But despite this, the book has caused a stir so far with an independent film maker from New York interested in making it into a film.
In addition, the book could be sold in Mississippi itself with discussions ongoing to have it on stock at the Delta Blues Museum gift shop.
Asked how he would feel to see his writing turned into a film, Mr Wall said: “It would be a fantastic and a dream come true.
“I am overwhelmed with the success of the book especially as it all came about by a chance conversation.
“I’m really quite proud about the way it’s turned out.”
