Dementia in focus for new Worcestershire festival

Malvern Editorial 5th May, 2024   0

A NEW festival is launching in Worcestershire to help raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding dementia.

The Worcestershire Dementia Festival organised by Age UK is set to take place from May 13 to May 19 in conjunction with The Hive in Worcester.

The event aims to serve as a platform to educate, raise awareness and decrease stigma of the disease.

A highlight of the festival includes an art exhibition entitled ‘See the Person, not the Dementia’ – a ‘powerful’ display that was created by Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire’s (H&W) clients and staff.

Dr Chris Russell, Karen Gray and Jane Twigg – who published the book ‘Leisure and Everyday Life with Dementia’ – will be speaking among members with lived experiences of dementia during a Q&A session.

Other key parts of the week include a visit to Spetchley Gardens and several information sessions around Age UK H&W support, with advice for carers from Admiral nurses and the Worcestershire Association of Carers.

One of the primary goals of the week is to not only raise awareness of dementia but express how a diagnosis has an impact on family and friends as well as those with the illness.

The charity’s dementia services manager, Kelly Reeves, said This event promises to be a hive of activity, offering a platform to showcase the unique experiences and identities of those living with dementia, while also providing valuable insights into the support available for individuals and their families.

“I encourage everyone to attend and join us in promoting awareness, understanding and inclusivity within our community.”
