A DISTRICT councillor in Malvern is calling for action to bring the former Talbot Head Hotel in Upton back into use.
Malvern Hills District Councillor, Jeremy Owenson, believes the council should move Upton Library from its current premises to the former hotel.
The building has featured for many years in MHDC plans to improve the economic development of Upton, but moves to repurpose the building ‘continue to be delayed’.
“I used to work in a library, and they can be a focal point for our communities, but they need footfall.
“If the library was moved to the ground floor of the Talbot, this would act as a hub for both our community, and for the economy,” said Jeremy Owenson.
Upton library is currently located on Oak Street, a pedestrian footway set back behind the main shopping street in Upton.
The library adjoins the Upton Police station. The property is owned by the County Council, but the local Town and parish councils provide financial support to keep the library open.
Owenson added: “The library could also provide local access to District and County Council Services.
“By moving the library, a new focus will be developed for the High Street, and this could be funded by selling off the land the library currently occupies.
“This would turn a Council liability into a Council asset, and give residents better value for money.”
Worcestershire County Council, who are responsible for Upton Library, have been approached for comment.
