Former soldier launches healthy new career

Malvern Editorial 22nd Apr, 2014 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016

A BRAVE Malvern woman whose active lifestyle changed forever when she was hurt in a road crash is now leading a group to help people become healthier.

Ruth Roberts’ life has not been the same since 2005 when while serving in the army in Afghanistan she was involved in a collision, damaging her hip and pelvis.

The injuries sustained and the lack of an active lifestyle afterwards meant her weight fluctuated over the years and the heavier she became the more pressure was put on her hip, which she was told would need to be replaced later in life.

Thanks to a friend, Ruth found a group in her army camp in Germany which led to her starting her weight loss journey.

She said: “I knew being overweight made things harder for me. Over the years I have tried other diets to keep the weight down to protect my hip but eating army food made this hard.

“A friend and I joined the slimming group together. If I didn’t have her with me I’m not sure I would have had the courage to join on my own.

Last year saw Ruth discharged from army duties on medical grounds before she returned to Malvern and joined a similar group.

Since then Ruth has lost 1st 3lbs on Slimming World’s plan which encourages members to eat normal everyday healthy foods.

After enjoying being part of the group, Ruth is now set to take over a Slimming World group in Malvern.

“I never imagined after leaving the army that I would have a chance at another career.

“I love seeing everyone in our group doing well, changing their lives getting slimmer, fitter and healthier just like I have. I can’t wait to get started.

“This is so important for people of all ages to learn how to eat healthily and I am going to have an impact on that in Malvern. My group is the only morning group in the town making it available to more people who can’t make an evening group.”

Ruth takes over the Holy Trinity Parish Hall group on Worcester Road from Thursday (April 24) at 9.15am. For more information or to join Ruth’s group go along on the day or call her on 07900 996288.
