A FALKLAND veteran and district councillor has been named as the local champion of members of the armed forces and veterans.
Coun Martin Allen was named Malvern Hills District Council Armed Forces and Veterans champion some four decades after he began serving his country when he joined the Royal Navy.
The Upton and Hanley Green councillor was just 16 years old when he joined up and three years later found himself HM Submarine Valiant during the Falklands War where the Valiant like so many others fought Argentina for control of the islands.
“This is a new and exciting role for Malvern Hills District Council. For me it’s more that just a title, it’s about helping veterans and service personal who live in the council’s area to access all the help that they are entitled to,” the 56-year-old said.
“When I left the Navy in 1990 I initially found it hard to adapt and any help or guidance the council could have given would have been more than just useful.”
