A FAMILY of five had to be taken to hospital following ‘a serious collision’ near Ledbury.

A black Land Rover Defender and a grey Mercedes estate collided on the Trumpet Crossroads, between the A438 and A4172, last night (Wednesday) about 10pm.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 48-year-old man, was trapped in the vehicle and had suffered a suspected pelvic injury and had pain in his chest.

He had to be cut from the wreckage, which took fire crews and hour and 40 minutes, before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

A 12-year-old girl, who had already got out of the car when emergency services arrived, had bruising to her chest and was complaining of neck pains so was taken to Hereford County Hospital.

The other three passengers were a 43-year-old woman who suffered a suspected fractured jaw, a young boy, ten, who had chest tenderness and a 15-year-old girl who received a minor head injury.

All three were taken to Hereford County Hospital.

Three ambulances, a community paramedic, a MERIT trauma doctor and two doctors from Mercia Accident Rescue Service (MARS) attended the incident.

The road was re-opened about 4am.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When emergency services arrived they found a badly damaged car in a field which had reportedly been involved in a collision with a second car.

“The five occupants of the badly damaged car, a father, mother and three children, were all conscious and breathing.”

She added she believed the driver of the Land Rover was not taken to hospital.

Police have urged anyone with information on the incident to contact them on the non-emergency number 101 or by calling Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
