Family-run shoe shop shortlisted for national awards

AN HISTORIC family-run shoe retailer in Malvern has been nominated for two national gongs in this year’s Footwear Industry Awards.

Robin Elt Shoes, who have been part of the town for 142 years, are one of five nominees aiming to pick up the Outdoor Independent Retailer of the Year award this year.

The Church Street based store has also made the final shortlist for the Multiple Footwear Retailer of the Year award.

After being founded in 1872 by Albert Edward Elt, the shop has gone from strength to strength and now has ten stores across the UK including Worcester, Totnes, Leominster and Hereford.

The Malvern store is also in a prime location for outdoor enthusiasts and offers plenty of quality world-famous brands including Meindl, Merrell, Ecco, Timberland and Romika.

And for managing director Robin Elt, who joined the business in 1964, providing quality made shoes comes from more than just experience.

“True quality that stems from experience is a bye word but in my book, it has to combine with comfort, fit and real world value,” he said.

“It’s a great honour to be nominated for the awards because we have been chosen by our piers in the industry.

“After 142 years in the shoe business, I think it’s safe to say that we have not only a fair knowledge of the shoe industry but also something of a passion for it.

“Our relationship with our customers and our staff is paramount.

“In an ever-changing world, I feel reassured that although many of our suppliers are based in Europe, 90 per cent of them are still family owned.

“That enables my daughter and myself to develop an amazing rapport and synergy with their production and styling.”

This year’s awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 21 at the National Conference Centre in Solihull with the winners being announced by guest host, Gregg Burns.
