A LEADING leisure provider has been handed a special accolade for the environmentally friendly way it is running its Malvern centres.

Freedom Leisure, which runs Malvern Splash Leisure Complex, Sport Dyson Perrins Leisure Centre and Sport Martley Leisure Centre, in partnership with Malvern Hills District Council, has been awarded an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certificate.

Simon Davey, Freedom Leisure’s environmental manager, said the organisation voluntarily chose to undergo the inspection as part of its commitment to reduce its energy usage across all its 38 centres.

“We are delighted our eco work has been recognised with this formal certification,” he said.

Mr Davey added each of the centres used a range of measures including sensor lighting, push taps and greener waste management.

He added staff were also encouraged to put forward their own thoughts and ideas on how they could be greener.

Each site also has an eco-champion who works to help their centres save energy by reminding both staff and members to turn off lights and to recycle.

Green travel plans have also been put in place to encourage and show customers and staff how to get to the centres using public transport.

Mark Hammond, contracts and performance manager at the district council, said Freedom Leisure had made significant investments in environmental and energy saving measures such as pool covers, new lighting and improved air handling.

Mr Hammond added: “Freedom Leisure has made a fantastic start to delivering against its commitments as outlined in their tender.”
