A FREE workshop which encourages using creativity to combat mental health issues and promote wellbeing is on offer in Malvern in the New Year.
The Creative Club workshop will take place at The Pump Rooms, Tenbury Wells on January 11 from 1pm to 2.30pm.
Originally launched by the founder of Artists Clubhouse – Emily Johnson – during the pandemic, the workshops have since transitioned into in-person sessions across Worcestershire.
Emily, who grew up in Malvern and now lives in Worcester is an artist herself and began the workshops as a way to encourage people to use art as a ‘tool of escapism’ to promote mental wellbeing and positivity.
She said: “I initially came up with the idea to support my mum who was having to isolate due to a health condition.
“Many others showed an interest so I began sharing a theme each day inviting people of all skill levels to be creative and share it via social media.
“Having previously struggled with my own mental health and learning how important creativity has been for myself I wanted to share this with others.”
Earlier this year, Emily was awarded a grant from The National Lottery Community fund to be able to run pop up events to support people who perhaps are struggling with anxiety, depression and stress.
The workshops are even tailored towards those who are keen to learn new ideas for their mental wellbeing.
In each session Emily and fellow artist Kirstie Gregory go through a series of collaging and artistic activities.
Materials, snacks and drinks are all provided.
Leanne, a Creative Club participant said: “”I really enjoyed this evening’s workshop especially after a long day at work. It’s a really special thing.”
The workshops will coincide with an exhibition at The Artery Studios in February with participants being invited to show any work made during or since the workshop they came to.
