LIFE to 2016 is set for a chilly start with freezing temperatures forecast overnight.
Forecasters are predicting this afternoon (Thursday) will be fairly cloudy with a band of blustery showers, possibly bringing some hail and thunder, before skies clear to give a cold night.
Temperatures are expected to fall below freezing in the late evening with a hoar frost developing in many locations and icy patches where road surfaces remain damp resulting in the first real frost of the season.
Road surface temperatures are colder than the air temperatures as reported on weather forecasts and tonight they could fall as low as -4.
In preparation for this. Worcestershire County Council’s gritting teams will be out from 6pm to ensure main roads are treated.
Drivers are reminded to drive with caution and ensure they maintain a safe distance between themselves and other vehicles to allow for additional braking distance when roads are wet or icy.
Worcestershire County Council’s Highways Manager, Jon Fraser, said: “The frost expected tonight will be a real change to what we have been used to over the mild winter so far and the wind and rain of the last few days.
“There will of course be increased traffic on the roads as people return from New Year celebrations and we would urge people to take care when driving, or walking on potentially icy surfaces.”
