A GROUP of friends from Colwall have raised more than £10,000 towards a campaign to create a dedicated breast care unit in Worcestershire.

Val Gazzard, Maggie Knight Adams, Mhari Brown and Fiona Peet reached the total after holding a series of fund-raising events in aid of the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.

As well as taking part in a charity triathlon at Malvern Spa, the group put together a special brunch and bubbly event, sponsored by Blue Cedar Homes, at The Colwall Park Hotel last week.

A bumper raffle, which raised more than £4,000 for the pot, was also drawn as part of the celebrations, which included a healthy brunch and a special display from members of the Malvern Spa.

The hotel’s owners Hew Watson and Helen Rogers allowed the venue to be used free of charge and also donated numerous prizes to the raffle to show their support of the cause.

Steven Thrush, a consultant breast surgeon, thanked all involved for their support, while Nick Cooper, Blue Cedar Homes’ area director, said: “We are pleased to have been able to support an event for such a fantastic cause.

“It is encouraging to know the counselling facilities available at the new unit will provide comfort to the loved ones of those experiencing breast cancer in the area.”

Mrs Gazzard, from the steering group added: “I am overwhelmed and delighted so many people from Colwall and Malvern have supported our fund-raising effort.

“It has been an amazing community venture and I thank everyone who has been involved.”
