Funding means urgent repairs are well on the way

‘URGENT repair’ to one of the town’s wells is underway after funding was secured for its restoration.

Friends of Malvern Springs and Wells, a voluntary group which helps conserve and celebrate the springs and wells of Malvern, launched a programme to renovate the Lodge Fountain after it had become ‘unstable’.

Hundreds of pounds were raised through donations to fix the well, which is located at Hill House on the Worcester Road and work began last Wednesday (September 9).

It is one of about 130 wells in the town and has been there since 1810.

Cora Weaver, of the group, said: “There are some people out there who want nothing from it but to see some of Malvern’s heritage – which is falling to pieces – stabilised because it was very unstable.

“If it was wrecked and no-one was interested it would fall down, but it is not wrecked and people are interested so we want to maintain it.

“Following recent water erosion, the water flow has been undermining the foundations of the fountain and the plinth and basin need to be urgently repaired.

“This can hopefully be carried out soonest before the full winter flow rate returns to this seasonal water feature.”

The well, which was decorated for the Well Dressing about five years ago, will be replaced with ‘virtually the same’ stones by stonework specialist Catherine James, of James’ Stonework.
