Going the distance to raise vital cash

A MALVERN coffee shop worker has embarked on a 40 mile charity running challenge in honour of loved ones who have Type 1 diabetes.

Adam Stock, an assistant manager at Nero, took on a half marathon this weekend in Cardiff and is set to do another at the end of the week in Wimbledon before the final 13 miles which he hopes to complete in Birmingham on Sunday, October 19.

The 20-year-old began running more regularly when he crashed his Vespa bike in January and decided to jog the six mile route to work from his home in Worcester.

After finding it difficult at first, Adam soon started to enjoy his new found hobby and it was not long before he put it to even better use in May, completing his first half marathon in Liverpool and raising £700 for Diabetes UK.

He said his granddad has had Type 1 diabetes for a long time and recently one his best friends was also diagnosed with the condition, giving him an extra incentive.

Adam is running for the same cause this time round and hopes to at least match his previous fund-raising feat.

He said: “I have seen the impact diabetes has on peoples’ lives, my granddad has had Type 1 diabetes for as long as I can remember and then recently one of my best friends from primary school, Sophie Sheppard, was also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I saw a way I could harness my new found hobby of running and put it to good use to raise money for this great charity.”

Joy Jones, Midlands fund-raising manager for the charity, said: “If managed correctly people with diabetes can live healthy, happy lives. The money Adam raises will go a long way in helping us to continue to support people diagnosed with diabetes in Worcestershire to help them avoid some of the serious complications of the condition such as heart disease, stroke and amputation.”
