Gold medal winning Paralympic athlete visits Malvern school

GOLD medal-winning Paralympic cyclist Megan Giglia paid a visit to Malvern St James Girls’ School to show off her medal and give a talk to the pupils.

Megan, who won Great Britain’s first gold medal of the Rio Paralympics in the C1-3 3,000m event, spent time with the MSJ students to talk to them about her journey to sporting stardom.

In January 2013, Megan suffered a brain haemorrhage and stroke, which left her with restricted movement on her right side and she was told she would not get her voice back.

But Megan defied all the odds as she worked hard to regain her speech and movement while discovering a new sport to overcome what had happened to her.

It was at that point she progressed into a top athlete in her sport.

Megan also visited the Avenue Road-based school to support their Be Epic campaign which is raising awareness of epilepsy in children.

MSJ parent Lindsay Moore, whose youngest daughter suffers from epilepsy, is organising the campaign.

And the staff from MSJ’s prep department have helped put together a video to not only highlight the work of charity Young Epilespy, but also invite Take That star Gary Barlow to attend the Be Epic Ball next year which is hoped to be at the school.

Below is a video of Megan winning gold for Team GB at the Rio Paralympic Games earlier this year:
