Grand total for Nepal disaster

LEDBURY Rotary Club has rallied around the recent devastation in Nepal to donate vital supplies to victims.

The group took to the High Street in the town to collect funds for the hundreds of thousands of people who have been affected by the earthquake in the South Asian country.

Almost £1,000 was raked in on Saturday (May 2), which was enough for the group to send two emergency shelter survival boxes to Nepal.

The club has already sent out three of the packs and it said it will continue to fund-raise for the cause.

Each box instantly provides vulnerable families with emergency shelter and vital aid until food and other supplies can reach them.

They contain specially designed tents, thermal blankets, water filtration units, cooking equipment, tools, mosquito nets and items for children.

Spokeswoman Jan Long said: “Ledbury people have a reputation for their compassion and generosity and I thank them for coming out, donating and helping us to help others.”

The 7.8-magnitude quake, which struck on April 25, is known to have killed more than 7,500 people, injured more than 14,500 and three million are in need of food aid.

About 130,000 houses were destroyed in the natural disaster, meaning 24,000 people are now living in makeshift camps, while over 4,000 aid workers from around the world have been helping with relief and rescue operations.
