Grant to build on Repair Cafe success

A MALVERN project is set to open two new bases after being awarded a grant of almost £10,000.

The Malvern Hills Repair Café secured £9,305 from the Big Lottery Fund to launch venues in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The cafés, which offer repairs and advice on household goods, will open in July and support new projects as well as developing a training package to ensure their future.

Volunteers who run the project will also interact with schools and colleges to encourage youngsters to think about repairing or reusing items before they throw them away or buy new ones.

The current Malvern service offers full repair and advice on a range of different goods including furniture, electrical items, toys, tools and garden equipment.

Founders Jan and Chris Dyer said: “This is an extremely exciting project and public recognition from a major grant body that the repair café concept is a worthwhile community enterprise.

“After almost three years of operating in Malvern, we now have the resources to develop and expand the repair café concept and we are hugely grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for supporting us.”

The Malvern project was one of 38 across the West Midlands to share the £1.7million fund.

Lyn Cole, Big Lottery Fund deputy director England, added: “The awards are all about supporting people taking the lead to make a positive change in their local areas. These excellent projects will help improve communities in the West Midlands through National Lottery funding.”
