Great Malvern Cemetery's land extension to be officially consecrated next week

Malvern Editorial 18th Oct, 2017   0

THE LAND extension at Great Malvern Cemetery will be officially consecrated next week.

On Wednesday morning at 10.30am, the Honorary Assistant Bishop Rt Rev Michael Hooper will bless the new land to mark the completion of a long-running Malvern Town Council project.

Although the land can be used for burials immediately, bosses at the town council say it will be sometime before that is the case.

After the consecration, a roadway is to be put in place before Christmas to divide the new area of land as well as to provide good access to the cemetery for the public.

Linda Blake, town clerk at Malvern Town Council, said: “This has been a long-term project for the council to extend the burial area so our officers are pleased we have a date for the consecration.

“This presents us with the ability to continue using Great Malvern Cemetery for a long period of time before having to find other land for burials.

“That could be around 15 to 20 years from now.

“We have been working to this point for such a long time so it is good to get close to the end of this project.”

In 2006, the council agreed to expand Great Malvern Cemetery into what was the former Madresfield Road allotment site.

A few years ago, the majority of allotment holders at the Madresfield Road site were moved to the Monksfield Lane allotments in preparation for the expansion and only a few sanctuary plot holders were left due to their age or health.

The final few allotment holders knew they had to leave the site by January this year as the council would then begin the process of converting the site into suitable land for a cemetery.

Now that the site is completely vacant, planning permission has been obtained to build the roadway and a contractor has been signed up to put this in place.
