Great Malvern Primary School goes back to its Lansdowne roots to mark 100th birthday

YOUNGSTERS from Great Malvern Primary School celebrated the school’s 100th birthday in style by holding a special concert at its former home.

The school’s choir visited the school’s original building in Lansdowne Crescent Methodist Church to perform a short concert which also marked the church’s 150th birthday.

Youngsters sang a variety of songs, some of them in Welsh and some as rounds, all from memory.

Great Malvern Primary started its life as the Wesleyan School in the rooms under the church.

Around 100 years ago the school numbers were so great that the rooms were overcrowded and noisy and the inspectors condemned the building, so a new school was built in Pickersleigh Road.

As well as the concert, the children also got to see the former classrooms and spoke to Roy Holland, a pupil at their school before the Second World War, and Christopher Davis whose family worshipped at Lansdowne for several generations.

An exhibition of old photographs and documents was open every day during Malvern Civic Week and is still on display after it was decided to keep them on display for a few more weeks.

Future 150th anniversary events include Sunday services taken by former ministers, a church picnic, and an outdoor Songs of Praise at 6.30pm next Sunday (July 17).
