MALVERN Town Council chiefs have announced they have taken down its Christmas Tree after it blew down on Christmas Day.
The Observer was alerted to the news when Malvern Deputy Mayor Hannah Campbell revealed on Twitter on Tuesday the tree would not be replaced.
Malvern Town Council’s operations manager Charles Porter confirmed the news when he spoke to the Observer earlier this morning (Wednesday).
“The tree blew down on Christmas Day in the afternoon in those gusts.
“We heard about it on Tuesday morning and with all the switches and gear that’s on it, it was pretty impossible to get a crane to put it back up and also quite expensive.
“So we took a decision to take off the gear, cut it up and take it away.”
The council also confirmed that this was the first time the tree had blown down in the 12 years trees had been up on Belle Vue Terrace.
Mr Porter added: “We’ve had trees on there for twelve years and never had a problem.”
Disappointment that the tree was no longer there was expressed on social media.
In a Facebook post to BBC Hereford and Worcester, Melvin Leaman said: “Are Malvern Town Council barmy or mad by taking the Christmas tree and town lights down. It’s the 27th December, haven’t they heard of 12 days after Xmas that’s one way to turn shoppers off and visitors to town off, making it unwelcome.”
