NEW benches designed to encourage conversation between members of the public have been installed in three parks across Malvern.
The ‘Happy to Chat’ benches have been put in by Malvern Town Council following an idea championed by Councillor Julie MacLusky with support from other elected members.
You’ll find the benches in Victoria Park, Rose Gardens and Station Gardens with colourful plaques on them. The signs read: ‘Sit here if you don’t mind someone stopping to say hello’.
The benches follow an idea adopted by various countries including the United States, Canada, Australia, Switzerland and Ukraine.
Malvern Town Council hope the benches will provide a simple way of letting others know you are open to a chat.
The council will consider adding ‘Happy to Chat’ benches to other town council land if the idea proves successful.
Coun MacLusky said: “Councillors will be aware of publicity about the health risks of loneliness.
“I believe our ‘Happy to Chat’ benches could play a small but very significant role in alleviating loneliness, and improving social connection and interaction among the residents of Malvern.
“Many people could benefit from a random hello and chat.”
