Have your say on proposed changes to Church Street, Great Malvern

Malvern Editorial 13th Nov, 2017 Updated: 13th Nov, 2017   0

RESIDENTS are being invited to have their say on proposed changes to Church Street in Great Malvern.

Worcestershire County Council is proposing to make improvements to the appearance of the road in order to improve access to premises, improve traffic flow and make the area look better.

Currently, short term congestion can occur outside premises on Church Street due to parking, loading and through bus travel on narrow parts of the road.

Alongside the on-street parking spaces for approximately eight cars, there is not sufficient space for two vehicles to pass comfortably, leading to delays.

For pedestrians, there is the opportunity generally to improve access to the retailers on Church Street and Church Walk and further afield, by making more useful connections, such as informal crossings, where people choose to cross.

A traffic and access report has been conducted to consider the impact of various changes to the traffic arrangements on Church Street.

After carefully considering this report, alongside discussions with local Worcestershire County Council elected members, the authroity is proposing two options for improvements to the Church Street area.

Coun Ken Pollock, cabinet member with responsibility for economy and infrastructure, said: “Public realm schemes such as these are essential to transform town centres into functional yet attractive spaces where people can visit, shop and enjoy their leisure time.

“We have two options and we’d like to hear the views of residents on which one they would prefer.”

An engagement session is being held at Waitrose in Edith Walk, Malvern, on Wednesday from 10am until 12pm where the two options will be presented.

The wider period of consultation started last Friday and finishes on December 22.

Works in Great Malvern are due to start in Easter 2018.

Those who are unable to attend the session on Wednesday but want to take part in the consultation should go to www.worcestershire.gov.uk/greatmalvern.
