MALVERN residents are hoping someone will be able to help solve the mystery of a strange knocking noise which was heard in the early hours of the morning in the Madresfield area of the district.

Mandy Simmonds put out the original post about the ‘loud rhythmical tapping noise’ around 2am on the Malvern UK Noticeboard Facebook page.

There were more than 70 comments in response – both from people who had heard it and others tagged friends, having also heard the same thing.

People speculated as to what it was, with some saying they thought it was to do with the railway line, while others suggested it could be down to the Three Counties Show or the Sunshine Festival in Upton-upon-Severn.

Others mooted that it could be ‘ghostly goings-on’ or the ‘supernatural.

Among the areas it was heard were ‘Madresfield Village’ and ‘near the cricket ground’, along with several roads, including Regency Road, Lower Howsell Road and Coronation Road.

Samantha Greetham said: “It woke us up. Definitely something that was moving as it was really loud outside our house and then gradually got quieter like it was moving away. Our cameras didn’t pick anything up. We assumed maybe a massive freight train coming through?”

Another person who was awoken by the strange noises in the Madresfield area was Stuart Stockley who contacted the Malvern Observer.

He said he experienced a noise which was neither ‘rhythmic’ or ‘tapping’.

“It seemed to be bumping along the road as if it was something being towed.

“As it approached where I lived I looked out of my bedroom window and saw what seemed like vehicle lights passing by.

“My first impression was it may have been a military tank, the noise being loud and irregular.

“My impression was that it then moved north along the A449.”
