Helping to make a clear difference

IT WAS all hands on deck for Upton residents who took to the river to get involved in a national clear up day.

Jackie Surtees, chairman of Upton in Bloom, and her team sailed along the Severn last Saturday (March 21) to clean rubbish found along the riverbanks and wrapped around brambles and trees, filling two large bags of litter.

Jackie said: “Taking part in the clear up day was great fun and really rewarding.

“We took to the river on ‘Conny Lee’ to pick litter from the riverbanks.

“Armed with litter pickers and a long pruner, we collected lots of rubbish.

“Our Skipper Richard did a fantastic job of guiding Conny Lee into impossible places so we could reach litter.”

Ivor Pumfrey, head of community services at Malvern Hills District Council, added: “This was a great opportunity to bring people together with local communities and give their towns and villages a spruce up.

“Upton upon Severn is very popular with visitors and much-loved by its residents and we give a huge thank you to the volunteers who have helped to transform the riverbanks of Upton so people can continue to enjoy this attractive waterside town.”
