ONE OF Malvern’s oldest hotels, steeped in history and connected to one of the town’s most prominent families, has been put up for sale.

The Montrose Hotel, understood to be one of the very first boarding houses built in the town, is available to purchase for around £875,000.

It is unclear at this stage whether the 16-bedroom building on Graham Road will remain a hotel in the future or whether it will be used for something else.

Worcester firm Estates Direct, who are the sales agency for the property, told potential buyers: “EstatesDirect.com are delighted and heartened to bring for sale this superb Grade II listed building, built in the favoured Regency style, either to remain as a hotel or with great development potential, subject to change of use, subject to the correct planning permission being obtained.”

A Grade II Listed building, the hotel was built in 1844 and is approximately 7,750 square feet in size.

The land which the hotel sits on was owned by the Foley’s – a prominent family in the town.

Lady Emily Foley was part the of the family after marrying Edward Foley and also the daughter of the third Duke of Montrose James Graham who died in 1836, so when the property was built – eight years later – it was named after Lord Montrose.

Estates Direct bosses said there was a lot of interest expressed in the hotel with more than a dozen viewings taking place within its first few days of sale.

Louise Goodman from Estates Direct said: “There has been a lot of interest in the property with up to 13 viewings so far. We expect more in the coming days.”
