HUNDREDS of people flocked to Malvern over the weekend to get their hands on one of tennis’ biggest trophies.
As part of a nationwide tour to celebrate Team GB’s historic Davis Cup victory against Belgium last November, more than 400 people attended Manor Park Club on Albert North Road on Sunday to see the magnificent trophy.
Tennis lovers got the chance to get their picture taken with the trophy – which was memorably clinched at the end of last year when Andy Murray defeated Belgian’s David Goffin in a dramatic last day singles match to win their first Davis Cup in 79 years.
A live music show from the Chandos Swing Band was on offer the visitors as well as a pig roast, free tennis coaching sessions and the chance to try archery, bowls, squash, racketball and table tennis.
Visitors also immersed themselves in exhibition tennis matches as well as getting the chance to sample the Wimbledon experience on the club’s grass courts.
The cafe bar also sold refreshments throughout the day.
Andrew Nicholls, general manager of Manor Park Club, said: “It was a great day enjoyed by all, and the attendance exceeded our expectations.
“Although the club has been in existence since 1907 we are still unfamiliar to many, so this was an opportunity to showcase Manor Park Club as one of the best sports facilities in Worcestershire to a wide variety of people.”
The famous trophy will visit more than 50 venues across the country and is a thank you from the LTA to the wider tennis community including players, coaches, venues and volunteers who supported the team on its incredible journey.
It is also aimed at encouraging more people to participate in tennis.
