Illegal moped riders evade Malvern police following pursuit through Leigh Sinton Christmas tree farm

SLIPPERY offenders riding a moped illegally managed to evade authorities after a police pursuit through Malvern on Sunday, July 2.

The two offenders were riding without helmets on the moped which had no registration, tax or insurance and failed to stop for police after being pursued on Leigh Sinton Road, Malvern at 1.30pm.

Following the pursuit, the moped driver lost control of the vehicle on gravel causing both riders to flee into Leigh Sinton Christmas Tree Farm.

The moped was seized by police but the offenders managed to avoid capture in the vast field of trees.

The vehicle which had recently been in several incidents of driving away from petrol stations without paying for fuel was seized and will be destroyed.

PC Dave Olczak who was driving the Police vehicle stated “An increasing number of criminals use mopeds to commit crime because they think they can get away and are untouchable.

“Officers have to assess and constantly re-assess the risk to all persons involved when considering pursuing a vehicle.

“The riders did not have helmets on, however were on a low powered moped traveling at a very low speed, with the weight of two males on a bike designed for one rider.

“That along with several other factors, allowed me to come to the conclusion that it was proportionate to pursue the vehicle which turned onto the farm very shortly after making off from our police car.

“I would have liked to detain at least one of the males, but given the vast field of trees that they disappeared into, it was impossible to locate the males.

“Myself and PCSO Kevin Tudge who was in the passenger seat of my vehicle were very pleased to take control of the moped.”.
