A HORSE was rescued from the River Severn after getting in and being unable to get out because the banks were too steep.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) crews headed to the scene at Severn Stoke, in between Worcester and Upton-upon-Severn, around 9.40am yesterday morning.

Among them were a fire crew from Upton, a rescue boat from Evesham and a large animal rescue team from Bromyard.

The boat crew was able to get close enough to the animal and strapped a horse harness to it.

The crew then led it to shallow water and she was able to get up the bank.

A vet, who was also at the scene, checked the horse over and when she was deemed fine she was able to rejoin her tribe in the field.
