It won't be lonely this Christmas, vows Waitrose

Malvern Editorial 18th Sep, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

THERE will be plenty of festive cheer for vulnerable people in Malvern after a supermarket pledged to tackle isolation over the Christmas period.

For the third year running, Waitrose will help the elderly and homeless in the community when the festive season gets underway in the town.

The supermarket giant is set to support Christmas lunch events in the area, for people who may otherwise be on their own on December 25.

The Great Malvern branch is asking organisers of Christmas dinner events to get in touch and apply for backing from the retailer. The deadline for requests is Wednesday, September 30.

Support will see every Waitrose shop offer food, money and resources to events and hundreds of volunteers will be offered to help plan the lunches.

James Alldridge, branch manager at Waitrose Great Malvern, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer our support to a Christmas lunch in Malvern and we surrounding area.

“We would encourage organisers to contact us with their plans.”

More than 750,000 people over 65 say they always or often feel lonely and the support is aimed at cutting these numbers.

Tina Varns, Waitrose community manager, added: “Our branches are at the centre of the communities they serve.

“We know how important this time of year is to so many people and it is important everyone has the opportunity to enjoy that.

“We want to play our part in helping more people have a merry Christmas this year.”
