Lib Dems announce West Worcestershire parliamentary candidate

Malvern Editorial 14th Jan, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016

LIBERAL Democrats in West Worcestershire have named Dennis Wharton as their prospective parliamentary candidate for the upcoming General Election.

The 52-year-old was selected following a hustings event in Malvern in December and will fight the seat currently held by Conservative MP Harriett Baldwin.

The part-time teacher has run a successful local business since 2005 and has been married for the past 17 years.

Dennis has a son still in school and is a passionate campaigner on local issues including school closures, road safety and energy efficiency.

“I am so proud to have been selected to stand in West Worcestershire at the General Election,” he said.

“I believe in working closely with communities to represent them properly on the issues that really matter.”

He said his priorities in West Worcestershire included finding viable and workable solutions toward reducing the constituency’s carbon footprint and to protect green spaces and farmland.

The party would also campaign for better funding for schools and a consultative approach on where to build affordable housing which reflects community views and respects preservation of rural areas and villages.

Dennis also advocates school-led discussions toward finding solutions to educational issues of tackling bureaucracy in schools, cutting teachers’ workload and freeing up time for teaching.

A party spokesman said: “Dennis is a community champion and has fought several local elections, raising the Liberal Democrat vote on each occasion.

“He inspires all those who work with him and was a popular choice at the hustings.”
