Local concerns reflected in Malvern Hills Bill Amendments

LEGISLATIVE proposals to revise the ways that the Malvern Hills are preserved will return to the House of Lords but with a series of amendments reflecting the objections raised by local people.

The Malvern Hills Bill has been examined by expert members of the House of Lords who heard a series of petitions from residents.

The major change proposed to the Bill is that the board of 12 people must have more elected members to improve representation of local views.

The Lords also commented that there has been substantial opposition to the Bill and the high number of people petitioning the committee was ‘unprecedented’.

The report also highlighted that the process of bringing the change forward had ‘created a sense of mistrust’.

Dame Harriett said: “The Lords report is very thorough and I am glad that so many of my constituents have been listened to and their objections heard.

“The Bill will now have to be changed and discussed further by their Lordships.

“It may reach the House of Commons by the summer.  I will continue to follow this matter closely and urge the Trust to communicate clearly with all local stakeholders.”
