Malvern Common given extra protection

Malvern Editorial 1st Dec, 2018   0

A MUCH-LOVED grassland in Malvern has been given extra protection by Natural England.

The almost 21-hectare Malvern Common has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The designation recognises the wildlife and flora on the site and will complement the existing management measures for Malvern Common and the rest of the Malvern Hills.

Jonathan Bills, conservation manager with the Malvern Hills Trust, said: “As landowners we have put in a lot of work over the years to improve the grassland wildlife here through traditional hay-cutting.

“This has clearly worked as in summer it is literally full of orchids and buzzing with life, providing a stunning backdrop to many people’s lives.

“We shall continue to strike a balance between the wildlife here and its use as a tranquil spot for recreation.”

Emma Johnson, Natural England area manager for the West Midlands, added the SSSI designation was an important step in protecting Malvern Common.

“We’re lucky to have such an amazing site teeming with rare grassland species in the Malvern area,” she said.

“It provides a wonderful place for people and nature.”
