Malvern couple set for 'Brave The Shave' fundraiser

A COUPLE from Malvern are set to have their heads shaved as a special thank you to the nurses who helped their loved ones while suffering with cancer.

Kirsty and Stephen Brook will be having the major cuts later this month to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Care as part of the charity’s ‘Brave The Shave’ fund-raising event.

The pair, who before moving to Malvern lived in America for more than ten years, will see their looks completely transformed when they go through with the brave cuts at Rubios Hair salon on Barnards Green Road on Saturday, February 27.

Stephen’s father Derek was cared for by Macmillan nurses before he died of a brain tumor in 2014 and Kirsty’s uncle Keith Collier, who has recently been cleared of cancer following a fight with testicular cancer, was also looked after by dedicated nurses.

The caring and dedicated way the nurses looked after both Derek’s and Keith’s lives have inspired Kirsty and Stephen, both 46-years-old, to do the charity fund-raiser at their local salon.

Kirsty told the Observer: “We’ve seen it a few times and it’s something I thought was quite a good thing to do.

“We’ve not done anything this drastic before. We wanted to do something not just about giving but participating as well.

“My husband’s father had a brain tumor and Macmillan nurses came for him and my uncle who also had cancer and without the nurses he wouldn’t have coped because they helped him so much.

“The nurses did everything for them and that’s what I love about them. They don’t nurse those who need it but they do everything so they are not feeling lonely.

“It’s nice to know there is always goin to be someone there while they are suffering from cancer. We are very lucky to have them here because in America they don’t. They will help you all the way.”

Stephen will be going all the way while Kirsty will be left with very short hair following the cut. They both hope to raise more than £1,000 for the charity.

“We’ve wanted to do it for it so long,” Kirsty added.

“I think afterwards it maybe hard because i dont like short hair but its character building and raising money for a worthy cause.”
