Malvern duo combine to create charity song for refugee crisis in Middle East

A MUSICIAN and a poet, both from Malvern, have released a song for charity to show their support for those caught up in the refugee crisis in the Middle East.

Despite living more than 2,000 miles apart, electronic musician Drumdog and poet Jamieson Lee Dagdeviren-Hill met on social media.

And a poem made by Jamieson, who is known as The Bard of Malvern, struck a chord with Drumdog so the pair spoke about recording a track together.

The poem ‘Salutation’ celebrates the Celtic New Year of rising energy and positivity and the new accompanying soundtrack by Drumdog fuses ambient and nostalgic sounds with a drum and bass beat.

And Drumdog, who lives in Malvern, thinks it is an important time for people to get creative and make changes in the world.

He said: “I grew up in the Live Aid era where you watched a crisis on TV but didn’t really feel connected or know how you could help in any way, but now you really can make a difference.

“There are so many ways to get your photography, art, crafts, music, dance, theatre and poetry out there.

“Its important to make a noise about the things you are passionate about.”

Jamieson moved from Malvern to Istanbul, Turkey, a couple of years ago and has seen the crisis first hand, working with refugees to rehabilitate them in the UK and elsewhere.

In his poems and writing he describes Istanbul as the cultural link between Europe and Asia but the city has had its share of troubles due to the influx of displaced people.

Jamieson addedc: “I have fallen in love with this city [Istanbul] and it’s people, but it’s a hard place to live because you sometimes feel like you’re living on the frontline of the world’s problems.”

As well as raising awareness, the track also aims to raise funds for refugee charity People In Motion.

Images used in the ‘Salutation’ video also showcase the Through Refugees Eyes project.

Kirsty Fraser, co-founder of People In Motion, said: “We were excited when we heard about this project and we are very grateful to the guys for showing their support.

“Reminding people that the crisis still exists means so much to us.

“The profits from the track will directly help us get clothing, food and other aid out to displaced people who still need our help in Syria, Greece, France, Eastern Europe and elsewhere.”

Salutation costs £1.50 and is available to buy from iTunes, Spotify, Deezer, Amazon and from www.omnidog.cog.
