A MALVERN flat had to be evacuated after a quick-thinking neighbour spotted smoke ‘billowing from the address’.
Officers from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and Malvern’s Safer Neighbourhood Team were called to a ground floor flat in Elgar Avenue at 8.20am today (Thursday) after reports of smoke pouring out the building.
Fire crews confirmed the incident had been started by an electrical fault in the kitchen fridge. One occupier was evacuated.
PCSO Tracey Caldwell, who attended the scene, said: “A quick-thinking neighbour spotted the smoke early this morning and dialled 999 immediately, then went to alert the occupant.
“Thankfully, there were not any flames, just a lot of smoke billowing from the address.
“Although this can be just as deadly, the incident serves as a good reminder to test your smoke alarm regularly.”
