THE MALVERN Folk Dance Group celebrated its 90th anniversary at the weekend.

Founded in 1927, the group held their birthday event at the Hanley Swan Village Hall on Saturday.

‘Callers’ Brian Stanton, Laura Hodges and Jill price guided joined in with the celebrations and guided dancers through a wide variety of traditional English country dances.

Live music was provided by folk duo Patchwork and the dance group’s committee also laid out a buffet lunch.

A 90th anniversary cake was also baked and decorated by club member Judy Westcott.

A Malvern Folk Dance Group spokesperson said: “You may never have heard of English Country Dancing but if you have ever watched Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility on TV or in the cinema you will have seen the kind of dancing that the group perform.

“You might be surprised to learn that groups like the one in Malvern are still keeping this tradition alive all around the country.

“Old dances from the period are still performed regularly and new ones are being written incorporating more modern influences and variations.

The Malvern Folk Dance Group meet every Monday evening in term time at St Andrew’s church hall, Poolbrook, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Beginners are always welcome and it is not necessary to bring a partner.

The group would particularly like to encourage younger dancers to come along so that the tradition can continue to be passed on from each generation to the next.
