Malvern Hills beacon to be lit to mark Her Majesty The Queen's 90th birthday

MALVERN’s famous Worcestershire Beacon is to be lit to celebrate of Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th Birthday.

Worcestershire County Council has been invited to take part in lighting the landmark on April 21.

A special ceremony will be lead by Lord Lieutenant Patrick Holcroft who will ligh the beacon at the top of the Malvern Hills at 8.30pm.

He will be joined by special guests including Ian Hopwood, chairman of Worcestershire County Council, Barbara Williams, chairman of Malvern Hills District Council, Val Wood, chairman of Wychavon District Council and Mayor of Malvern Julian I’Anson.




More than 1,000 beacons will be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK overseas Territories and a Commonwealth Country to celebrate the landmark birthday.

Kempsey, Redditch, Worcester, Bromsgrove and National Trust properties Croome Park and Hanbury Hall are already taking part in the celebration by lighting beacons, and other towns, parishes and local communities are encouraged to get involved.


Alan Smith, Worcestershire partnership manager, said: “Our country has a tradition of celebrating significant royal occasions with the lighting of beacons, and I’m delighted that we’re able to celebrate this momentous milestone of Her Majesty the Queen’s 90th birthday in this way.

There is something very special about being part of this chain of beacons across the country and overseas, and it would be great to have as many people along as possible to join in this wonderful occasion.”

Bruno Peek, pageant master for The Queen’s 90th Birthday Beacons project, added: “It has been an enormous privilege to be able to organise this amazing community event to celebrate the 90th Birthday of Her Majesty The Queen. I am delighted to see so many different organisations playing their part.”

The Worcestershire Beacon event is being supported by Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and Malvern Hills District Council.
