Malvern Hills District Council leader stands down

THE LEADER of Malvern Hills District Council believes everything is in place for the authority to move forward after announcing he was standing down from his position.

Phil Grove, who was elected in 2015, released a statement yesterday (Thursday) which said it was with a ‘heavy heart’ he had withdrawn his name for re-election as leader.

But the Hallow Ward representative at Worcestershire County Council felt it was the right time for a new person to take charge and lead the district council into a new era.

He said: “When I was first elected to the role two years ago I said I would only serve two terms.

“That has now come to an end and so I am sticking to my word.

“Having laid the foundations for a stable and successful future for the council and the district, I feel now is the right time for a new person to take charge.

“Someone with a fresh pair of eyes and potentially a new approach to the problems that lie ahead and the difficult decisions that need to be taken.”

Coun Grove, who is also stepping down as leader of the Conservative Group, also paid tribute to his fellow councillors of all parties for their constructive challenge during his tenure.

Over the past two years the Tenbury Ward representative at the district council has implemented a five-year plan which sets out the authority’s vision for the area as well as producing a business plan which will balance the books while maintaining front-line services.

He also said the council is working ‘harder than ever’ to engage with residents and ensure their views play more of a role in decision making.

But despite stepping down as leader, Coun Groves hopes he will remain an active part within the authority.

“I would like to be able to continually help the district council if they feel my experience is required,” he told the Observer.

“I’m not giving up anything else and I would welcome being a part of what I have started.”

A new leader of the district councillor will be elected at the annual meeting next Tuesday.
