Malvern Hills District Council proposing 2.9 per cent council tax rise

Malvern Editorial 4th Feb, 2023 Updated: 8th Feb, 2023   0

MALVERN Hills District Council is proposing to raise its portion of council tax by 2.9 per cent for the forthcoming financial year.

The authority says the 2023/24 increase would ensure all services were maintained to current levels.

Among the services MHDC is responsibe for are waste and recycling collections, planning services, housing and green spaces.

The council adds it also allows it to keep open widely used community assets such as Malvern Splash and Tenbury Community Pool.

It would equate to an extra £5 for those living in Band D properties and £177.60 for Malvern Hills District Council services.

The council says that would be far below the rate of inflation and was still one of the lowest Council Tax bills in the country and the second lowest in Worcestershire.

The proposal will go to the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday, February 7, and, if approved, the final decision will be made at full council on February 21.

Coun Peter Whatley, Portfolio Holder for Resources at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “I understand an increase in council tax is not something that residents will welcome, but it is vital to ensure our frontline services can continue while utility and other costs are rising at a far greater rate.

“As a council, we believe it is essential to keep all our services at current levels and community assets available.

“Those include our well-used leisure centres and theatres.”

He added support was available for those struggling to pay their council tax bill and urged anyone needing the assistance to contact the authority at malvernhills.gov.uk or call the council on 03004 560 560.
