Malvern man completes 100-mile kayak challenge to mark 100th cycle of chemotherapy

A BRAVE Malvern man who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour has just completed a 100-mile kayak challenge to coincide with his 100th cycle of chemotherapy.

Ben Lindon, 39, set out with his support team which included friends Will Davies, David Williams, Chris Redman and Janet Redman to raise money for Brain Tumour Research.

The challenge, which ended at Chepstow in Monmouthshire, was particularly gruelling for Ben, not only because it was his first time kayaking but because of the far-reaching effects of his treatment since his diagnosis in 2008.

Over the four days of the challenge, Ben had to negotiate fast rapids and strong currents as well as the occasional capsize.

However, with his two lucky charms in his son’s (Sidney) Lego man and daughter’s (Sue) panda, he completed the 100-mile experience.

“It has been the most amazing experience,” Ben said.

“Along with the fantastic scenery in the Wye Valley, I have particularly enjoyed seeing all the wildlife along the river, including kingfishers and birds of prey, herons, swans and all manner of ducks and even otters.

“By the time we reached the finish, however, I was totally knackered and desperate for a pint or two of cider.

“What has kept me going over the last four days is the knowledge that my efforts are raising vital funds for research to help find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure for brain tumours.”

Ben’s Wye 100 challenge has raised more than £6,000, bringing his total raised for Brain Tumour Research to more than £16,000.

The mammoth task was dedicated to Ryan Taylor, a young man from Nottingham who became friends with Ben over social media.

Ryan tragically died earlier this year, aged 26, from a brain tumour.

Carol Robertson, head of community fund-raising for Brain Tumour Research, said: “Ben is an amazing ambassador for our charity as well as an incredible fund-raiser.

“It’s vital that campaigners like Ben help to shine the spotlight on this neglected cancer.”
