A LONG-STANDING Malvern charity supporting special needs children and their families has been chosen as the town mayor’s beneficiary for the upcoming civic year.
Malvern Special Families has been chosen as mayor councillor Marilyn Birks’ charity beneficiary for her second stint in the role.
Coun Birks was voted in as mayor of Malvern for a second term during Malvern Town Council’s annual meeting on May 14, with Coun Josephine Leibrandt becoming deputy mayor.
After asking fellow town councillors to nominate possible charities, Coun Birks made her choice as the cause is close to her heart because of her previous work with families as a support worker.
Malvern Special Families was set up in the 1980s when a group of parents who had special needs children got together for mutual support and to allow their children to socialise.
The charity now provide support to around 150 families within the area via groups, trips and clubs for young people to participate in.
Mayor, Marilyn Birks said “I’m very pleased to announce that Malvern Special Families will be the mayoral charity for 2025-26.
“Working to support children and young people with disabilities and special needs is close to my heart as I have worked, in the past, with such families.
“Providing safe, stimulating, fun social and creative opportunities is crucial to well-being, and I look forward to raising essential funds to allow more young people to benefit.”
Malvern Town Council will be running multiple events over the next year to raise awareness and funds for the cause. Visit www.malverntowncouncil.org for more information.
